Definition
A proposition bet, or prop, is a wager on an outcome within an event that is not the final result - a specific player to score, the number of corners or cards, a team to lead at half-time, the time of the first goal, a player's total points or passing yards. Props can be player-based, team-based or event-based, and they are offered both as standalone bets and as legs in a bet builder or same-game multi.
Props typically carry a higher built-in margin than the main match markets because they are harder to price precisely and are priced more conservatively, and because their popularity in bet builders lets the book combine several into long odds. They range from statistically modelled markets to novelty props on things like a coin toss, and their availability and limits vary widely by sport and operator.
In context
For affiliates, props are a large category of betting content - player-prop previews, stat-based analysis, bet-builder suggestions - and the audience for them is engaged and stats-literate, so shallow content does not perform. Useful content brings genuine analysis (matchup data, usage rates, historical trends) and is clear that props generally carry a higher margin than match-result markets, so they should be approached as higher-cost bets, not as soft spots unless a specific edge is identified and explained.
The compliance points are those of all betting content with some sharper edges. Player props, especially in bet builders, are popular with younger fans following individual athletes, so content and placements must not appeal to under-18s. Integrity is a real concern with props: some markets (a specific player's minor stat, a first-throw-in) have been associated with spot-fixing, and operators void or limit certain props for that reason - content covering props responsibly explains that operators restrict and void suspicious markets and does not encourage betting on obscure, low-liquidity props where integrity risk is highest.
Age-gating, responsible-gambling messaging, and honest framing (props are entertainment bets with a house edge, not a reliable income route) are the standard, and novelty props should be treated as exactly that rather than dressed up as analysis.
Worked example
An affiliate's player-prop preview gives usage and matchup analysis for two selections, notes that props carry a higher margin than the match line so value is thinner, and explains that operators may void certain low-liquidity props on integrity grounds. The page is age-gated with responsible-gambling messaging and does not cover novelty props as if they were analysable.
