Definition
A side bet is an optional additional wager offered alongside the main bet in a table or live-casino game - pairs and 21+3 in blackjack, perfect pairs in baccarat, bonus bets in poker-based games, and similar. It is settled independently of the main hand, on a specific event (a pair, a suited three-card combination, a particular total), and it almost always carries a substantially higher house edge than the base game, often several times higher.
Side bets exist because they add volatility and a chance at a large payout to games that otherwise have low, grindy variance, and because the higher margin is good for the operator. They are entirely optional; a player can play the base game and ignore them.
In context
For affiliates, side bets are a specific, useful thing to cover in table-game and live-casino guides because many players do not realise how much worse the odds are. Honest content states plainly that side bets typically carry a house edge several times that of the base game - a blackjack base game might be under 1% with basic strategy, while its side bets can be 5-15% or more - so consistently taking them significantly increases expected losses.
Explaining the specific side bets a game offers, what each pays and its approximate house edge, lets a reader make an informed choice.
The framing should be neutral but clear: side bets are a legitimate optional feature, not a trick, but they are among the worst-value bets on the table, and content should not present them as a smart way to boost winnings or highlight big side-bet payouts as representative. Where a review scores games or operators, a game whose main draw is high-edge side bets is not a point in its favour on a value basis.
Standard age-gating and responsible-gambling framing applies, and the practical takeaway for readers is that the base game is the better-value bet and side bets are an entertainment add-on with a real cost.
Worked example
An affiliate's blackjack guide lists the available side bets with their pay tables and approximate house edges (for example a pairs side bet around 6%), contrasts that with the sub-1% base-game edge under basic strategy, and states plainly that regularly taking side bets raises expected losses. It does not present them as a way to win more.
