Definition

An attribution dispute is a disagreement over which party should be credited with a conversion - most often between two affiliates whose touches both appear in a player's journey, or between an affiliate and the operator over whether the affiliate's tracking was the last valid one before registration. Common triggers are cookie-window expiry, a later touch from a coupon or brand-bidding affiliate overwriting an earlier content affiliate's cookie, cross-device journeys where the tracking did not carry over, tracking loss that made a genuine referral invisible, and self-referred traffic (a player searching the brand and clicking an affiliate's brand ad).

Disputes are resolved against the programme's stated attribution rules (usually last valid affiliate click within the cookie window) and the available data. Clear rules, a reasonable cookie window, and granular reporting reduce them; vague terms and thin reporting produce them.

In context

For affiliates, attribution disputes are most damaging for content and comparison sites, whose role is often to introduce and build trust in an operator earlier in the journey, only for a coupon site, a brand-bidding affiliate, or the operator's own retargeting to take the final click and the commission. The structural fix is in the deal: negotiating a first-touch or assisted-conversion component, a longer cookie window, or a flat CPA that does not depend on winning the last click, and getting the attribution rules in writing before running traffic.

When a specific dispute arises, resolution depends on evidence: the affiliate's own click and referral logs, the timestamps, the device and IP continuity, and the operator's step-level data. An affiliate that keeps independent tracking can often show its touch was within the window and valid; one relying only on the operator's dashboard cannot.

Programme terms that ban brand bidding and restrict coupon methods exist partly to prevent the interception patterns that cause these disputes. For affiliate-facing content, the guidance is to confirm the attribution model and cookie window in the contract, keep independent logs, understand where the affiliate's traffic sits in typical journeys (early-funnel content is disadvantaged by last-click), and negotiate deal terms that compensate the actual role played rather than only the final touch.

Worked example

A content affiliate sees a conversion it expected credited to a coupon site instead. Its logs show its referral was three days earlier, inside the 30-day window, but the coupon click came 20 minutes before registration and overwrote the cookie.

Under the programme's last-click rule the coupon site is credited. The affiliate renegotiates for a first-touch assist component to stop this recurring.
