For affiliates, an unusually high proportion of bonus hunters in a cohort is a traffic-quality problem that shows up as low retention, deposits clustered at the bonus-qualifying minimum, and immediate withdrawal attempts after wagering completes. It usually traces to the promotion angle and the audience: creatives and prelanders that lead almost entirely with a big bonus figure, offer-wall and reward-site traffic, and communities organised around bonus extraction all select for hunters.
Advertisers see the resulting cohort value and either scrub the conversions, cut the CPA, or end the partnership.
The fix for an affiliate is to broaden the angle beyond the bonus — covering the operator's games, payment speed, licensing and overall experience so the traffic includes players who want to play, not just to farm — and to avoid the traffic sources that concentrate hunters. Some affiliates deliberately work the bonus-hunting niche with content aimed at that audience; that is a legitimate strategy, but it requires operators who knowingly accept that traffic on terms (often lower CPA or first-deposit-only) that reflect its value, rather than sending it into a standard programme that will reject it.
Worked example
An affiliate's new casino cohort has a day-30 retention of 3% and 70% of deposits exactly at the bonus-qualifying minimum, followed by a withdrawal request. The advertiser flags it as bonus-hunter traffic and cuts the CPA.
The affiliate rebuilds its prelander around game selection and payout speed rather than the bonus figure, and the next cohort retains at 22%.
