Bot traffic is web or app activity generated by automated software rather than by a human. It spans a wide range: legitimate bots (search-engine crawlers, monitoring and preview services, accessibility tools) and malicious or unwanted bots (scrapers, credential-stuffing scripts, fake-account creators, click and impression fraud, inventory hoarders, spam submitters).
Bot-management systems classify incoming traffic using behavioural analysis, device and network signals, and challenge responses, then allow, limit, challenge or block it by category.
Bots make up a large share of all internet traffic, so distinguishing good bots, bad bots and humans is a routine part of running any site at scale. The consequences of getting it wrong run both ways: failing to filter bad bots inflates metrics and enables abuse, while over-blocking can shut out search crawlers or real users on unusual networks.
In context
In iGaming, bot traffic matters on both the operator and affiliate sides. Operators face bots creating fake accounts for bonus farming, stuffing stolen credentials, scraping odds and pricing, and probing for weaknesses; bot management sits alongside CAPTCHA, fingerprinting and KYC to contain this.
Affiliates and advertisers face bot traffic as ad fraud — automated clicks and installs that consume budget and produce registrations that never deposit — and as analytics distortion that makes a source look bigger than it is.
For an affiliate, bot contamination in a traffic source is a direct financial problem: paying for clicks that are bots, or delivering operators "players" that are automated, leads to voided commissions, damaged programme standing, and wasted spend. Practical defences are filtering known bot signatures and data-centre IP ranges in the tracker, watching for tell-tale patterns (implausible click-to-registration ratios, no post-click engagement, uniform device profiles), comparing tracker numbers against the operator's, and cutting sources that fail.
On the publishing side, an affiliate's own site should filter bot traffic out of its analytics so its media kit and performance figures reflect real humans. The honest position is that some bot traffic is unavoidable and the job is measurement and filtering; buying traffic that is knowingly bot-inflated, or presenting bot-padded numbers to partners, is fraud.
Worked example
An affiliate testing a new traffic source sees a 9% click-to-registration rate but zero deposits and no post-click page engagement. Filtering data-centre IPs removes 60% of the clicks, and the operator's tracker shows far fewer registrations than the affiliate's. The affiliate drops the source, having concluded it is largely bot traffic, before it damages its programme standing.
