Definition
A free bet is a sportsbook promotion that lets a player stake a set amount on a bet without risking their own money, with the key condition that if the bet wins, only the profit is paid out and the stake itself is not returned. This "stake not returned" or SNR rule makes a free bet worth less than its face value — typically around 70-80% of the nominal amount in expected value, depending on the odds it is used at — which is why sophisticated users place free bets on higher odds to extract more of that value.
Free bets are the sportsbook equivalent of a casino bonus and come with comparable terms: minimum odds the free bet must be used at, an expiry window, exclusion of cashed-out or certain market types, and wagering or turnover conditions on any winnings before withdrawal. They are used for acquisition (as part of a welcome offer), for retention (reload free bets, acca insurance paid as a free bet), and for reactivation.
In context
For affiliates, free bets are one of the most common sportsbook offers to explain, and the SNR mechanic is the single most misunderstood point. Accurate content spells out that the stake is not returned, works an example so the reader sees the real value, states the minimum odds and expiry, and explains any wagering on winnings.
"Bet 10 get 30 in free bets" headlines without this context routinely lead to complaints when a player expects a winning free bet to pay stake plus profit.
The compliance and responsible-gambling dimension follows the same rules as any gambling promotion: minimum-odds conditions must not be so high that they push players toward long-shot bets, the offer must be presented with its full terms visible, age-gating and responsible-gambling messaging apply, and free bets must not be marketed to self-excluded or at-risk players. Some markets restrict how bonuses including free bets can be advertised, and a few have moved to limit or ban them.
For an affiliate, comparing sportsbooks on the genuine value of their free-bet offers — face amount, whether stake is returned, minimum odds, wagering, expiry — is far more useful to readers than ranking by the headline number, and it is the kind of accurate, decision-useful content that also performs well in search.
Worked example
An affiliate's welcome-offer comparison explains that a 30 free bet is stake-not-returned, so on odds of 2.00 a winning free bet pays 30 profit, not 60, and shows the effective value is around 22. It lists minimum odds, 7-day expiry and any wagering on winnings for each sportsbook, and applies age and responsible-gambling standards throughout.
