Definition
G4 certification, awarded by the Global Gambling Guidance Group (G4), is an internationally recognised voluntary certification standard verifying that an iGaming operator's responsible gambling policies, procedures, and tools meet a defined benchmark of player protection best practice. The G4 was established in 2005 as a cross-jurisdictional initiative to create a consistent global standard for responsible gambling programmes, independent of individual national regulators.
Certification requires operators to undergo a formal assessment conducted by an accredited G4 assessor, demonstrating compliance across six core areas: responsible gambling policies, staff training, player interaction, self-exclusion programmes, advertising standards, and research, education, and treatment contributions.
The G4 assessment process involves document review, staff interviews, technical platform audits, and mystery shopping exercises. Assessors evaluate whether responsible gambling tools are correctly implemented (deposit limits functioning in real time, self-exclusion applied immediately), whether customer-facing staff can identify and respond to signs of problem gambling, and whether advertising materials comply with responsible gambling messaging standards.
The assessment typically takes 2–4 weeks for mid-size operators and results in a certification valid for one year, with annual re-certification required. Operators that fail initial assessment receive a remediation plan and 90 days to address deficiencies before re-assessment.
In practical terms, G4 certification signals to regulators, B2B partners, and players that an operator has voluntarily committed to a responsible gambling standard beyond the minimum requirements of its gambling licence. Regulators such as the MGA reference G4 certification positively in their own compliance assessments and may apply lighter-touch monitoring to certified operators.
For operators targeting corporate responsibility-conscious markets or seeking institutional investment, G4 certification contributes to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) credentials increasingly scrutinised by investment committees.
For B2B stakeholders - game studios, platform providers, and payment processors - working with G4-certified operators reduces reputational risk. Some tier-1 providers have incorporated G4 certification (or equivalent responsible gambling standards) as a commercial prerequisite for preferred partnership terms.
Worked example
Betsson holds G4 certification, verifying its responsible gaming tools (deposit limits, self-exclusion, reality checks) meet international standards.
