In brief

Google Search Console is Google's free service that reports how a verified website performs in Google Search and lets the owner see and influence how Google crawls and indexes it.

Definition

Google Search Console is Google's free service that reports how a verified website performs in Google Search and lets the owner see and influence how Google crawls and indexes it. Its core reports cover search performance (clicks, impressions, average position and click-through rate by query, page, country and device), index coverage (which URLs are indexed, which are excluded and why), Core Web Vitals and page-experience signals, sitemap submission and status, manual actions and security issues, and structured-data validity.

Unlike third-party rank trackers, Search Console data comes directly from Google's own logs, so it is the authoritative source for what a site actually ranks for and receives traffic from. It is limited to roughly the last 16 months, samples and rounds some figures, and only covers Google, but within those limits it is the primary diagnostic tool for organic search.

In context

For an iGaming affiliate site, Search Console is where SEO problems surface first. The coverage report shows if new glossary or review pages are being indexed or held in "Discovered — currently not indexed" (a crawl-budget or quality signal), if canonical tags are being respected, and if Google has picked a different canonical than the one declared.

The performance report shows which queries a page ranks for versus which it was built for, exposes striking-distance keywords (positions 5–15 where small improvements yield traffic), and reveals cannibalisation when two URLs trade impressions for the same query.

It is also the channel for two-way communication with Google: submitting sitemaps, requesting reindexing of updated pages, using the URL Inspection tool to see the rendered HTML and last crawl, and — critically for this sector — receiving and responding to manual actions. Gambling affiliate sites are disproportionately targeted for unnatural-links and thin-content manual actions, and Search Console is where that notice appears and where the reconsideration request is filed after cleanup.

Regular monitoring of coverage trends, sudden impression drops aligned to core updates, and new manual actions is basic operational hygiene for any site in a competitive, heavily scrutinised niche.

Worked example

After publishing 150 glossary pages, an affiliate checks Search Console coverage and finds 60 stuck in "Discovered — currently not indexed". It improves internal linking from the A–Z hub, adds unique depth to the thinnest pages, and submits an updated sitemap; over three weeks the indexed count rises.

Separately, an impression drop is matched in the performance report to a core-update date, isolating the cause.
