Odds formats (decimal, fractional, American)

Odds formats are the different ways the same price is written.

By Min-ji Kim · Chief Editor Updated 6 September 2026
In brief

Odds formats are the different ways the same price is written. Decimal odds show the total return per unit staked including the stake (2.50 means 2.50 back for every 1 staked, a 1.50 profit).

Definition

Odds formats are the different ways the same price is written. Decimal odds show the total return per unit staked including the stake (2.50 means 2.50 back for every 1 staked, a 1.50 profit).

Fractional odds, common in UK and Irish racing, show profit to stake (6/4 means 6 profit for every 4 staked). American (moneyline) odds show, for a positive number, the profit on a 100 stake (+150), and for a negative number, the stake needed to profit 100 (-200).

All three express identical prices; a bettor can set their preferred display and convert between them.

The formats also make the implied probability more or less obvious: decimal odds convert directly (1 divided by the price), which is why they are the standard for analysis, while fractional and American take an extra step.

In context

For affiliates, an odds-formats explainer is basic, high-value educational content, especially for an audience spanning markets where different formats dominate. Content should show each format with a worked example, how to convert between them, and how each relates to implied probability.

It is useful decision-support content that also answers a very common beginner question, and it pairs naturally with the implied-probability and margin explainers.

The framing is purely educational — odds formats are a display choice, not a strategy — and content should note that all bookmakers offer a format switcher so a bettor can use whichever they find clearest, and that decimal is generally easiest for comparing prices and calculating returns. It should carry age-gating and responsible-gambling messaging like any betting content, and should not use the explainer to push a particular operator.

For affiliate-facing content, the framing is that odds formats (decimal, fractional, American) are equivalent ways of writing the same price, that a clear explainer with conversions and examples is genuinely useful beginner content, that decimal is the most convenient for analysis, and that it should be presented as neutral education with standard safer-gambling framing.

Worked example

An affiliate's explainer shows the price "6/4" as fractional (6 profit per 4 staked), "2.50" as decimal (2.50 total return per 1), and "+150" as American (150 profit per 100), all identical, with a conversion table and a note that decimal is easiest for comparing prices. It links the implied-probability explainer and carries responsible-gambling messaging.
