In brief

An orphan page is a page that exists on a site but receives no internal links from any other page, so it is not reachable by following links from the home page or navigation.

Definition

An orphan page is a page that exists on a site but receives no internal links from any other page, so it is not reachable by following links from the home page or navigation. Search-engine crawlers discover pages mainly by following links, so an orphan page may be crawled slowly, infrequently, or only if it appears in the sitemap or has an external link — and it receives no internal ranking signal, because internal links are one of the ways authority flows around a site.

Orphan pages are almost always accidental. They come from content imported or migrated without updating the link structure, pages created by a template that nothing links to, old campaign landing pages, pages left behind after a navigation redesign, and URLs that were once linked from a page that has since been deleted.

In context

On large iGaming affiliate sites, orphan pages are common because the content grows in bulk — one review per operator, one page per market, per payment method, per game provider — while internal linking is often left to a global menu that only covers the top-level sections. The result is thousands of content pages that link outward (to operators) and up (to the menu) but are not linked to by any sibling or hub, so they sit at the edge of the site's link graph, crawled rarely and ranking below their potential.

Finding orphans requires comparing the full list of published URLs (from the CMS or sitemap) against the set of URLs discovered by a link crawl of the site: anything in the first list but not the second is an orphan. The fix is contextual internal linking — adding "related operators", "licensed in this jurisdiction", "accepts this payment method" and similar blocks to the templates so every page links to and is linked from its relevant neighbours.

This is usually one of the highest-return SEO actions available on a large affiliate site, because it improves crawl discovery and distributes ranking signal to pages that were previously getting none, with no new content or backlinks required.

Worked example

An affiliate compares its 4,200 sitemap URLs against a link crawl and finds 1,600 orphan review pages reachable only via the sitemap. Adding a related-links block to the review template — each review now links to 10 relevant pages — connects them into the link graph, and over two months their crawl frequency and average position both improve.
