On a fixed-lines game the player always bets all lines; on a selectable-lines game the player chooses how many to activate, and the total stake is the per-line bet multiplied by the number of lines.
Paylines are one of two dominant win-evaluation models, the other being "ways to win" (any matching symbols on adjacent reels, position irrelevant) and its variants like cluster pays. The number and shape of paylines, combined with the per-line bet, determine the total stake and interact with the symbol maths to produce the game's hit frequency and volatility.
In context
For affiliates, the payline concept is worth explaining clearly because it underlies two things players regularly misunderstand. First, total stake: on a 20-line slot a "1 coin" bet is often a 20-coin total, which surprises players who did not realise the line count multiplies the stake — a review should state how staking works on the games it covers.
Second, more lines does not mean a better deal: adding paylines increases both the total bet and the number of ways to hit something, and the RTP is unchanged; it changes the texture of play (more frequent small wins, faster bankroll turnover) not the expected return.
Content should also make the honest point that the payline structure is fixed game maths, not something a player can exploit. On selectable-lines games, playing fewer lines lowers the stake and the hit frequency proportionally but does not improve RTP or "save" the player money in expectation.
There is no line-selection strategy that beats the house edge. Where relevant, a review can note whether a game is fixed or selectable lines, what the minimum and maximum total stakes are, and how the line model compares to a "ways" or cluster game the reader might also be considering.

Worked example
An affiliate's slot review states the game has 25 fixed paylines, so the minimum total stake is 25 times the coin value, explains that all 25 are always in play, and notes that the line count affects how often small wins land but not the 96.1% RTP. It flags that one reviewed casino runs a 94% version of the same game.
