Definition
Telegram advertising covers several distinct things: the platform's own Telegram Ads system (short text ads shown in large public channels, bought through the official platform or resellers), paid placements bought directly from channel owners (a post in their channel for a fee), and bot-driven acquisition funnels. Telegram is a major channel in CIS and several emerging markets for iGaming, betting tips, and affiliate content, partly because its moderation of such content has historically been lighter than mainstream social platforms.
The two dominant models are official Telegram Ads and direct channel buys. Official Ads are limited-format and target by channel topic and language; direct buys let an advertiser place a full post - text, image, link, call to action - in a specific channel whose audience they want, negotiated with the channel admin on price and format.
In context
For iGaming affiliates, Telegram is used to build owned audiences (a tips or bonus channel the affiliate runs, monetised with operator links) and to buy reach in others' channels. Owned-channel building is the durable play: a channel with an engaged subscriber base is a first-party asset the affiliate controls, similar to an email list, and it can be re-monetised across many offers.
Direct channel buys are a traffic-acquisition tactic where the key risks are inflated subscriber counts, bot-padded engagement, and channels that recycle the same audience across many paid posts.
Evaluating a direct buy means checking real reach (views per post versus subscriber count), audience geo and language, posting frequency of competing paid posts, and past performance if available. Compliance still applies: gambling advertising laws in the recipient's market govern what can be promoted and how, disclosure of the commercial nature of a post is expected, and promoting unlicensed operators or making misleading claims carries the same risks as anywhere.
Telegram's lighter moderation lowers the barrier to running gambling content, but it does not remove the legal and reputational exposure.
Worked example
An affiliate grows a betting-tips Telegram channel to 45,000 subscribers with about 12,000 views per post. It monetises with two licensed bookmakers, disclosed as partners, converting at 4–5% per promoted post.
It also buys occasional posts in three larger channels, checking each for real views-per-subscriber before paying.
