The model replaces a flat pile of loosely related articles with a deliberate hub-and-spoke structure. Instead of ten separate posts about casino bonuses that compete and cannibalise, there is one pillar "casino bonuses explained" and ten cluster pages — welcome bonus, no-deposit, wagering requirements, cashback, reload, and so on — each the definitive page for its sub-topic and each reinforcing the pillar.
In context
For iGaming affiliates, topic clusters are the natural way to organise the large amount of related content these sites need. Clusters form around jurisdictions (a regulation pillar with per-market cluster pages), payments (a payments pillar with per-method and per-country cluster pages), game types, operator comparisons, and responsible gambling.
Building this way, rather than publishing articles ad hoc, prevents cannibalisation, makes the internal-linking structure obvious, and gives search engines a clear map of the site's expertise.
The practical method is: define the topic and its head term (the pillar), use SERP-overlap keyword clustering to identify the distinct sub-topic intents (the cluster pages), build the pillar as a genuinely useful overview that links to each cluster page with descriptive anchors, and build each cluster page as the best answer for its intent with a link back to the pillar and to sibling pages where it helps the reader. An affiliate has 14 loosely linked articles about bonuses, several competing for the same terms. It restructures them into a "casino bonuses" pillar plus 11 cluster pages, each targeting a distinct sub-intent, all cross-linked.
Cannibalisation disappears, the pillar rises for the head term, and total bonus-topic traffic roughly doubles over a quarter.
