Definition

A traffic quality score is a composite rating an operator assigns to an affiliate's traffic based on how its players behave after acquisition: registration-to-deposit conversion, average and median player value, retention, bonus-cost ratio, chargeback and fraud rates, share of self-excluded or duplicate accounts, and geo and device profile. It condenses these into a single grade or number that the operator uses to decide commission levels, caps, offer access, and whether to keep the affiliate at all.

The score exists because volume alone tells an operator nothing about profitability. Two affiliates delivering the same number of first deposits can differ many times over in the net revenue those players generate, and the quality score is how the operator distinguishes them and prices accordingly.

In context

For affiliates, the traffic quality score is effectively the operator's verdict on whether the relationship is worth improving, holding, or ending, and it directly drives the commercial terms on offer. An affiliate that understands what feeds the score can manage toward it: honest creative and accurate expectations retain better than inflated ones; targeting markets and audiences where the operator has good product fit and payment coverage lifts conversion and value; filtering bot and incentivised traffic keeps fraud and chargeback rates down; and avoiding bonus-hunter audiences keeps the bonus-cost ratio healthy.

The score also gives the affiliate leverage when it is good. Being able to show, with its own cohort data, that its traffic converts, retains and generates sustainable value is the strongest argument for a higher CPA, a better revenue share, a hybrid, or removal of a cap.

Conversely, a poor score is a signal to diagnose the source — is it the market, the audience, the creative, the funnel, or genuine fraud contamination — and fix it before the operator acts. For affiliate-facing content, the practical framing is that operators buy player value, not clicks or registrations, so the durable strategy is to optimise the whole funnel toward players who deposit sustainably and stay, and to keep the data that proves it.

Chasing volume with low-quality traffic produces a poor score, worse terms, and eventual termination.

Worked example

An affiliate's traffic quality score with one operator falls after it adds a new source. Diagnosis: the source's registrations deposit at half the usual rate and clear welcome bonuses at triple, dragging the bonus-cost ratio and value metrics down.

The affiliate drops that source, the score recovers over two months, and the operator restores its previous CPA.
