Definition
User review moderation is how an affiliate site handles player-submitted ratings and reviews of operators: verifying they are from real users, filtering spam and fake or planted reviews (positive ones from operators, negative ones from rivals), removing abusive or defamatory content, and deciding how user scores are displayed and whether they influence the site's own ranking. Unmoderated user reviews are easily manipulated and can also create legal and spam-policy problems for the host site.
Done well, user reviews add a layer of real player experience alongside the affiliate's own assessment. Done badly, they are a vector for operator reputation management, competitor attacks, and user-generated spam.
In context
For affiliates that host user reviews, moderation is both a quality and a compliance matter. Operators and their agencies actively try to plant positive reviews and bury complaints, and rivals plant negatives, so unmoderated review sections quickly stop reflecting genuine experience.
The practical controls: require registration or verification to submit; filter and pre-moderate for spam, links and duplicate or templated text; check for review-bombing patterns (bursts from similar accounts or IPs); remove content that is abusive, defamatory or clearly fake; apply rel="ugc" to any user links; and be transparent about how user scores are calculated and whether they feed the site's ranking.
There is also a defamation and consumer-protection dimension: publishing false factual claims about an operator (that it stole funds, is unlicensed) without basis can expose the host, and moderation should distinguish opinion and verifiable fact. Genuine complaints should not be suppressed to protect a commercial relationship — a site that removes real negative reviews of partners loses the trust that makes user reviews worth having.
For affiliate-facing content, the framing is that hosting user reviews brings an active moderation obligation, that both operators and competitors will try to manipulate them, and that the value of the feature depends on moderation being genuinely independent of commercial relationships and on fake or manipulative content being filtered on both sides.
Worked example
An affiliate's user review system requires a verified account, pre-moderates submissions for spam and templated text, flags bursts of similar reviews as possible review-bombing, and applies rel="ugc" to any links. It publishes genuine negative reviews of partner operators, removes only defamatory or fake content, and states plainly how user scores are calculated and that they do not change the editorial ranking.
