In brief

An advertiser is the company whose product or service is being promoted and which pays for the results that promotion delivers.

Definition

An advertiser is the company whose product or service is being promoted and which pays for the results that promotion delivers. In iGaming the advertiser is the operator, sportsbook, casino brand, poker room or lottery running an affiliate programme, and it is the source of all commission in the chain: affiliates and networks are ultimately paid by the advertiser for the registrations, deposits or ongoing revenue they generate.

The advertiser sets the rules of engagement — the commission model (RevShare, CPA or hybrid), the exact action that qualifies for payment, the countries where its traffic is allowed, the traffic sources and creative approaches it permits or bans, and the schedule and hold on payments.

The advertiser also carries the risks that affiliates are insulated from: holding the gambling licence, funding player winnings, absorbing chargebacks, meeting regulatory reporting obligations and answering to payment processors for dispute ratios. Because of this, advertisers scrutinise incoming traffic for quality and fraud, and a serious mismatch between promised and delivered player value can lead to renegotiated terms, clawbacks or termination.

In context

Affiliates can reach an advertiser directly or through an affiliate network. Direct deals usually mean higher effective rates, access to cohort-level data and faster dispute resolution, but slower payouts for small partners and a separate integration and relationship to manage per brand.

Networks aggregate many advertisers behind one login and one payment, which is convenient for testing and cash flow but adds a margin and a layer between the affiliate and the operator's data.

Directory sites list advertisers with their programme terms — commission model, GEOs, payment methods, minimum payout, hold period and traffic restrictions — so an affiliate can compare several brands before applying rather than discovering deal-breakers after integration. The strongest advertisers publish transparent terms, pay on time, provide localised creatives and give a responsive affiliate manager; weak ones hide clawback clauses, delay payments and shift blame for quality problems onto partners, and word travels fast in affiliate communities.

Worked example

An affiliate running a Brazil casino review site signs directly with the operator at 35% RevShare instead of taking the same brand at 30% through a network. The direct deal also unlocks monthly cohort reports showing 90-day player value, which the affiliate uses to decide which brands to feature more prominently.
