Definition

An affiliate management agency is a company an operator hires to run all or part of its affiliate programme: recruiting and vetting affiliates, negotiating deals, onboarding, day-to-day account management, creative and offer distribution, performance analysis, fraud and compliance monitoring, and payment administration. Operators use one when they lack in-house affiliate expertise, are entering new markets, launching a brand, or want to scale the programme faster than they can hire for.

The agency model concentrates programme knowledge and relationships in a third party. That brings speed and existing affiliate networks, but it also means the operator is one step removed from its own partners and from the detail of how its traffic is generated — which matters in a regulated sector where the operator, not the agency, ultimately answers to the regulator for what affiliates do in its name.

In context

For an iGaming operator, using an affiliate agency does not transfer regulatory responsibility. The operator remains accountable for affiliate compliance — advertising standards, market restrictions, responsible-gambling messaging, no promotion to minors, disclosure — so the agency contract has to build that in: defined vetting standards, ongoing monitoring and reporting to the operator, the operator's right to review affiliate lists and creatives, clear escalation and takedown procedures, and audit rights.

An operator that treats the agency as a black box ("they handle affiliates") is the pattern regulators have criticised in enforcement cases.

For affiliates, working with an agency-run programme is usually similar to working with an in-house one, with the agency as the point of contact for approvals, creatives, reporting and payment. The differences to watch: the agency may run programmes for competing operators, so data separation and conflict handling matter; deal flexibility can be greater or lesser depending on the agency's mandate; and payment reliability depends on the chain from operator to agency to affiliate.

A good agency adds real value — market knowledge, quality affiliate relationships, professional compliance monitoring — but the arrangement works only when the operator stays actively informed about its own programme rather than delegating awareness along with execution.

Worked example

An operator launching in two new markets hires an affiliate agency for recruitment and management, but the contract requires monthly affiliate-list and creative reporting, operator sign-off on deals above a threshold, agency compliance monitoring against the operator's rules, and audit rights. The operator reviews the programme monthly rather than treating it as fully outsourced.
