Definition

A bank transfer in iGaming refers to the direct movement of funds between the player's bank account and the operator's merchant account, processed through national or international interbank payment rails without card networks or digital wallet intermediaries. The two primary frameworks are SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) for euro-denominated transfers within the EU/EEA, and SWIFT for cross-border international transfers in any currency.

Bank transfers are the preferred method for large withdrawals - typically above €5,000 - because they impose no per-transaction limits and are processed by regulated financial institutions, providing players with a high-trust, auditable payment trail.

Mechanics differ significantly between SEPA and SWIFT. SEPA Credit Transfers (SCT) settle within one business day under the standard scheme, or within 10 seconds under SEPA Instant (SCT Inst), now available across most EU member states.

SWIFT transfers, used for non-euro currencies or transfers outside the SEPA zone, typically take 2–5 business days and incur correspondent banking fees of €15–€50 per transfer. For operators settling with players in non-SEPA markets (Brazil, India, South Africa), SWIFT is the fallback but is increasingly displaced by Open Banking and local fast-payment schemes.

Bank transfers carry the lowest chargeback risk of any payment method. Initiating a bank credit transfer is a voluntary, authenticated action - the customer explicitly authorises payment from their online banking portal.

There is no equivalent of the card scheme dispute mechanism allowing unilateral reversal. However, the absence of a dispute mechanism also means players cannot recover funds sent to a fraudulent site, which regulators address by requiring operators to maintain clear payment identification strings (BIC, IBAN) that allow players to verify they are transacting with the licensed entity.

The practical challenge of bank transfers is speed. Most players expect deposit confirmation within seconds; a 1-hour SEPA standard transfer is operationally impractical for deposits in a high-velocity gaming environment.

This is why modern iGaming bank transfer deposits are largely handled through Open Banking intermediaries (Trustly, Volt, Token.io) that use real-time payment initiation to credit the player's account within seconds while the underlying interbank settlement completes in the background.

Operators frequently underestimate compliance requirements attached to large bank transfer withdrawals.
