Definition

Crypto payments refer to the acceptance of cryptocurrency transactions - most commonly Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Tether (USDT), and Litecoin (LTC) - as deposit and withdrawal methods on iGaming platforms. Unlike traditional card or bank transfer payments, crypto transactions are peer-to-peer, settled on a public blockchain without intermediary banks or card networks, and are irreversible once confirmed on-chain.

This structural difference has profound implications: crypto payments eliminate chargeback risk entirely, reduce processing fees to 0.5–2% (compared to 2.5–5% for cards), and enable instant deposits and withdrawals in markets where traditional banking is slow or inaccessible.

Technically, integrating crypto payments requires working with a crypto payment processor (CoinsPaid, B2BinPay, NOWPayments) or building in-house wallet infrastructure. The processor generates unique deposit addresses per player transaction, monitors the blockchain for incoming funds, and credits the player's account once required block confirmations are reached - typically 1–3 for Bitcoin (10–30 minutes) and near-instant for USDT on Tron (TRC-20).

Withdrawals reverse the flow, with the operator's hot wallet signing and broadcasting the transaction to the player's specified address. Many operators use stablecoins (USDT, USDC) for internal accounting to manage exchange rate volatility.

Crypto payments have become the primary payment infrastructure for Curaçao-licensed and offshore operators, enabling them to serve players in markets where credit card gambling transactions are blocked (United States) or where banks refuse gambling merchant relationships. Cryptocurrency appeals to a privacy-conscious player segment preferring gambling transactions not visible in bank statements.

This demographic tends to deposit larger amounts and shows higher lifetime value, making crypto-accepting operators disproportionately attractive to high-value players.

From a compliance standpoint, crypto payments introduce distinct AML challenges. Blockchain transactions are pseudonymous, but players can use mixing services, privacy coins (Monero, Zcash), or multiple wallets to obscure fund origins.

Licensed operators must apply the same KYC and AML standards to crypto deposits as to fiat transactions, including wallet screening against OFAC and other sanctions lists using tools such as Chainalysis, Elliptic, or TRM Labs. Regulators increasingly require tracing the source of crypto funds for large deposits, treating wallets as equivalent to bank accounts for due diligence purposes.

A frequent operational error is failing to account for blockchain network fees when setting minimum deposit amounts.
