Branded keywords, also called branded search queries, are searches that include a specific brand, product or domain name — "brandx casino", "brandx login", "brandx bonus code", "is brandx legit". They contrast with non-branded (generic) queries like "online casino" or "fast payout betting site" that name a need without naming a company.
Definition
Branded keywords, also called branded search queries, are searches that include a specific brand, product or domain name — "brandx casino", "brandx login", "brandx bonus code", "is brandx legit". They contrast with non-branded (generic) queries like "online casino" or "fast payout betting site" that name a need without naming a company.
The distinction matters because the two behave very differently in intent, competition and conversion.
Branded queries usually signal that the searcher already knows the brand and has navigational or specific intent — they want that brand's site, that brand's app, that brand's bonus terms, or a verdict on that brand's trustworthiness. They convert at much higher rates than generic queries and are far less competitive to rank for, because fewer sites target them and the brand's own properties dominate the obvious slots.
In context
For iGaming affiliates, branded queries about operators are a core traffic source. Someone searching "brandx casino review" or "brandx casino withdrawal time" is deep in the decision funnel, and an affiliate review that ranks for those terms converts well.
Because the operator's own site occupies the top navigational result, the affiliate is competing for the informational and evaluative slots — the review, the comparison, the "is it legit" verdict — which is a realistic goal even for a mid-sized site.
Branded search also functions as a demand signal for the affiliate's own brand. Rising branded search volume for the affiliate site's name indicates growing recognition and is one of the cleaner indicators that content and reputation efforts are working.
On the operator side, some affiliate programme terms restrict or prohibit affiliates from bidding on the operator's brand keywords in paid search, so the branded-keyword rules of each programme need to be checked before running any paid campaigns that could touch them.
Worked example
An affiliate maps its organic traffic and finds 55% comes from branded operator queries ("[brand] review", "[brand] bonus", "[brand] payout time") at a 9% click-to-registration rate, versus 2% for generic queries. It prioritises keeping every operator review complete and current for exactly those branded sub-queries, and overall conversion rises even though total traffic is flat.
