Definition
SEO competitor analysis is the systematic study of the sites that rank for the queries a site wants, to understand why they rank and what it would take to compete. It looks at their content (topics covered, depth, format, freshness, expertise signals), their technical setup, their internal-linking structure, and above all their backlink profiles — how many linking domains, of what quality, acquired how and when.
The useful output is not a scorecard but a gap list: the topics competitors cover that the site does not, the content depth and elements the ranking pages have that the site's equivalents lack, and the realistic scale and type of link acquisition needed to close the authority gap. Competitor analysis turns "we want to rank for X" into a concrete, sequenced plan.
In context
In iGaming, competitor analysis usually reveals two hard truths and one opportunity. The hard truths: the sites ranking for head terms have backlink profiles built over years that a new site cannot match quickly, and their content, while sometimes not brilliant, clears a depth-and-trust bar (named authors, tested data, methodology) that thin affiliate pages do not.
The opportunity: those same competitors often neglect the long tail — specific payment-method-by-country pages, provider-level game databases, up-to-date regulatory explainers — where a focused site can rank without matching head-term authority.
A practical analysis picks 5–10 direct competitors, maps which of them ranks for each target query cluster, and for the clusters where competing is realistic, itemises exactly what the ranking pages do that the site's version does not: word count is rarely the answer; usually it is a missing subtopic, absent original data, no comparison element, weak internal linking, or no expertise signal. For the head terms where authority is the blocker, the analysis quantifies the link gap and informs whether to compete there at all or to concentrate resources on the reachable long tail.
Worked example
Competitor analysis for a new affiliate shows the top three domains for "online casino" each have 8,000+ referring domains — unreachable in the near term. But for "casino pix withdrawal brazil" the ranking pages are thin and under-linked.
The affiliate concentrates on 50 such long-tail clusters, ranks for most within six months, and revisits the head terms only after building domain authority.
