A cooling-off period is a mandatory delay between a player requesting a change that increases their gambling exposure and that change taking effect — most commonly a delay before a deposit-limit increase applies (often 24 hours, or until the current limit period ends), and sometimes a delay before a self-exclusion or time-out can be lifted after it expires. The player can tighten a limit immediately; loosening one is deliberately slowed so it cannot be done on impulse mid-session.
