In brief

First-party data is information a company collects directly from its own customers and users through its own properties and relationships — registrations, logins, on-site and in-app behaviour, transactions, support interactions, and consented communications.

Definition

First-party data is information a company collects directly from its own customers and users through its own properties and relationships — registrations, logins, on-site and in-app behaviour, transactions, support interactions, and consented communications. It contrasts with third-party data, which is aggregated and sold by parties who did not have the direct relationship, and with second-party data, which is another company's first-party data shared by arrangement.

First-party data has become the strategic centre of digital marketing measurement as third-party cookies and cross-app identifiers are restricted. It is not subject to the same deprecation because it rests on a direct, consented relationship rather than on cross-site tracking infrastructure, and it is usually more accurate and more relevant to the business than bought data.

The trade-off is that a company only has first-party data on people it has a relationship with, so it does not solve prospecting to genuinely new audiences on its own.

In context

For iGaming operators, first-party data is the foundation of both retention and increasingly of acquisition. On retention it powers CRM segmentation, churn prediction, personalised offers and responsible-gambling monitoring.

On acquisition it seeds value-based lookalikes, feeds real conversion values into ad-platform optimisation, and supports server-side conversion APIs that pass events to platforms without relying on browser identifiers. An operator with clean, consented, well-modelled first-party data can measure and optimise where one relying on third-party signals increasingly cannot.

For affiliates, the first-party-data position is weaker because the player relationship belongs to the operator. A media-buying or content affiliate has first-party data on its own site visitors and funnel completions, which it can use for its own retargeting and lookalikes, but it does not have the operator's player-level retention and value data.

This asymmetry is one reason RevShare deals with cohort reporting are valuable to affiliates: they provide a partial view of downstream first-party outcomes that the affiliate would otherwise never see.

Worked example

An operator invests in a first-party data platform: unified player profiles, consented event tracking, an LTV model, and a server-side conversion API to its ad platforms. Acquisition optimisation improves because the platforms now receive real modelled values instead of flat conversion counts, and retention campaigns get sharper as segmentation runs on complete behavioural data.
