Geolocation verification is the technical confirmation of where a player is physically located at the moment they try to register, log in, deposit or bet, used to enforce that gambling is only offered where the operator is licensed and the player is in a permitted area. In strict regimes — notably US states, where a player must be within the specific state to bet — it uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi and cell positioning, IP data, and device checks, often through a specialist geolocation provider and a device plugin or SDK, and it actively detects spoofing (VPNs, GPS falsification, remote-desktop use).

Elsewhere, geolocation may be lighter (IP-based with VPN/proxy checks) but the purpose is the same: keep players in prohibited jurisdictions out, and keep licensed-market play inside the boundary.

For affiliates, geolocation verification explains real friction players experience and is central to routing traffic correctly. A player told they cannot bet because geolocation could not confirm their location, or because a VPN was detected, is hitting a licensing control, not a fault — content can frame it accurately and advise disabling VPNs and allowing location access for legitimate play in a permitted area.
