An interstitial ad is a full-screen ad shown at a natural transition point in an app or website — between game levels, between articles, on app launch or exit. It occupies the whole screen and interrupts the flow until the user dismisses it or a countdown ends.
Definition
An interstitial ad is a full-screen ad shown at a natural transition point in an app or website — between game levels, between articles, on app launch or exit. It occupies the whole screen and interrupts the flow until the user dismisses it or a countdown ends.
Interstitials command attention and pay well, but they are intrusive by design, so platforms and ad networks impose rules on frequency, placement (not during content, not on unexpected clicks) and a clearly visible close control.
Interstitials are distinct from the search-engine concept of an intrusive interstitial that harms page-experience ranking, though they overlap: an ad interstitial shown to a user arriving from search, blocking the content, is exactly what that ranking signal targets. As an app-monetisation format placed at genuine breakpoints, interstitials are standard; as a wall in front of web content from search, they are a liability.
In context
For iGaming, interstitials in apps follow the same restrictions as other high-impact mobile formats: gambling advertising is prohibited or tightly limited in game and general-app interstitials because of audience age, and permitted only in specific markets to verified adult audiences with full advertising identification and responsible-gambling messaging. A licensed operator using interstitials in a compliant market must respect frequency caps and ensure the placements are not in content aimed at minors.
On an affiliate's own website, ad interstitials are mostly a self-inflicted problem. Showing a full-screen ad or promo to a user who just arrived from a search result, before they can read the review or glossary page, blocks the content, raises bounce, and can trigger the page-experience demotion for intrusive interstitials.
Age verification and cookie consent are the legitimate exceptions and should be as compact as compliance allows. Promotional interstitials, if used at all, belong at later interaction points (exit intent, a second pageview) and must be easy to close.
The general principle for a content site whose value is immediate usefulness is to let the visitor reach the content on arrival; interstitials that stand between the user and what they came for cost both rankings and conversions.
Worked example
An affiliate removes a full-screen bonus interstitial that fired on every search entry to its review pages, keeping only the age gate and a compact consent banner. Bounce rate falls, average time on page rises, and the site clears an intrusive-interstitials flag in its page-experience reporting.
Any promo overlay now triggers only on exit intent.
