Definition
Know Your Customer (KYC) is the formal process through which iGaming operators verify the identity, age, and financial background of players as required by anti-money laundering legislation, gambling regulations, and payment industry standards. At its core, KYC involves collecting and validating identity documents (government-issued passport or national ID), proof of address (utility bill or bank statement dated within 90 days), and - for large transactions - proof of source of funds (bank statements, payslips, or tax returns).
The obligation to conduct KYC is mandated by the EU's 4th and 5th Anti-Money Laundering Directives and independently required by gambling licences from the MGA, UKGC, Gibraltar Regulatory Authority, and most reputable regulators globally.
KYC processes are typically tiered by risk and transaction volume. Tier 1 - basic verification (name, date of birth, address) - is triggered at registration and allows limited play before full documentation is required.
Tier 2 - full document verification - is triggered when cumulative deposits exceed a defined threshold (commonly €2,000–€5,000) or when a withdrawal is requested above a minimum amount. Tier 3 - enhanced due diligence (EDD) - applies to high-value players (VIPs), politically exposed persons (PEPs), or accounts exhibiting unusual transaction patterns, potentially requiring source of wealth declarations and face-to-face video verification.
The technology for conducting KYC has evolved substantially. Manual document review has been largely displaced by automated identity verification solutions (Onfido, Jumio, Sumsub, Veriff) that use optical character recognition (OCR) and machine learning to extract document data and perform liveness checks within 30–60 seconds.
These solutions return a risk score and compliance recommendation in real time, enabling operators to approve or escalate cases without manual intervention in 80–90% of instances. Integration is typically via API, with webhook callbacks delivering verification results directly to the operator's CRM or KYC management platform.
For affiliates, KYC has direct implications for conversion rates. Friction-heavy KYC processes - long document upload flows, slow manual review, multiple document requests - are a leading cause of player drop-off between registration and first deposit.
Affiliates driving traffic to operators with streamlined, automated KYC see measurably higher first-time depositor (FTD) conversion rates. Operators implementing risk-based KYC - lighter verification for low-risk, low-volume players with enhanced checks reserved for high-risk profiles - achieve the best balance between regulatory compliance and user experience.
Worked example
A player requests a €10,000 withdrawal. The operator requires: passport photo, utility bill (proof of address), and proof of funds source.
