Definition
A mobile proxy routes internet traffic through an IP address that a mobile network operator has assigned to a real device on its cellular network, so that requests appear to originate from an ordinary phone on 4G or 5G rather than from a server. Media buyers use mobile proxies for two purposes: to make an ad-account session's location match the country a campaign targets, and to keep the network identities of many accounts separate so that action against one does not cascade to the others.
Mobile proxies are valued because carrier-assigned IPs carry more trust with platforms than data-centre IPs and because they rotate naturally: mobile networks reassign addresses among subscribers frequently, so many users share an address over time, which makes a single IP look like normal consumer traffic rather than an automation endpoint. This natural churn is also a limitation — the IP is shared and not fully under the buyer's control.
In context
There are legitimate uses for mobile proxies — QA teams testing that a site renders correctly for users in different countries, ad-verification services checking where creatives actually appear, and researchers collecting public data at scale without hammering a target from one address. In affiliate media buying, however, mobile proxies are most often paired with an antidetect browser to operate multiple advertising accounts from one workstation, which is done to circumvent platform limits on restricted verticals and which breaches those platforms' terms of service.
Buyers who use this setup typically assign one dedicated mobile proxy per account profile, matched to the campaign's target GEO, and treat the whole stack — accounts, proxies, cards — as consumables with a limited lifespan. Detection methods evolve continuously, so no proxy configuration is durably undetectable, and the operation is a recurring cost of replacement rather than a one-time setup.
Regulated operators do not run this way; they use compliant agency accounts where the account's location and identity are legitimate.
Worked example
A buyer assigns one 4G mobile proxy in Brazil to each of 20 ad-account profiles in an antidetect browser, so every account's IP matches its target GEO and a ban on one profile leaves the other 19 running. Over a month, six proxies are flagged and rotated, and the proxy subscription is booked as a recurring campaign cost.
