Definition
Moderation is an advertising platform's review of a submitted ad, its landing page, and sometimes the account itself, against the platform's written policies — before the ad starts serving and, often, repeatedly afterwards. For unrestricted verticals moderation is a formality most ads clear automatically.
For gambling and other restricted verticals it is the gate that decides which campaigns can run at all, and passing it reliably is a core skill for an iGaming media buyer.
Moderation combines automated classification — image recognition, text analysis, landing-page crawling, policy pattern-matching — with human review, and re-checks are triggered by events: reaching a spend threshold, editing a live ad, a competitor or user report, or an algorithmic risk score. An ad that cleared review on day one can be paused for re-review on day ten, which is why buyers keep creatives and pages compliant even after approval rather than treating approval as permanent.
In context
There are two ways to deal with moderation. The compliant way is to align creatives and landing pages to the platform's written policy and the target market's advertising rules: no exaggerated or guaranteed win claims, correct disclosure of bonus terms, age-gating, responsible-gambling messaging, and the operator's licence details where required.
This gets certified or pre-approved status on platforms that allow gambling under a programme, and the campaign runs stably.
The non-compliant way is evasion — cloaking to show reviewers a different page, uniquification to slip rejected creatives back in, disposable accounts to absorb bans — all of which breach platform terms and, in the case of cloaking, can breach law. Evasion buys short-term access at the cost of constant account loss and legal and reputational risk, so it is confined to grey and black operations.
Licensed operators and reputable affiliates invest in passing moderation legitimately because the resulting stability compounds.
Worked example
An ad clears automated moderation and begins serving. After spending $400 it triggers a spend-threshold re-review and is paused for 18 hours while a human reviewer checks the landing page.
Because the page carries the licence, age notice and accurate bonus terms, it is reinstated, and the buyer notes that every creative on this account now faces a manual check at the $400 mark.
