Definition
A payment descriptor, or billing descriptor, is the text that appears on a customer's card or bank statement identifying a transaction - usually a merchant name (sometimes a shortened or trading name), a location, and often a support phone number or URL. For gambling, a licensed operator's descriptor should clearly identify the operator or a recognisable related entity and be coded to the gambling merchant category code, so the customer recognises the charge and any bank gambling block works as intended.
An unclear, generic or misleading descriptor causes problems: customers who do not recognise a charge dispute it (raising chargebacks), and a descriptor that disguises a gambling transaction as something else defeats bank gambling blocks and MCC-based controls, which is a compliance and card-network violation and a strong indicator of an unlicensed or non-compliant operator.

For affiliates, the payment descriptor is a small but genuine operator-legitimacy and consumer-protection signal that belongs in thorough reviews and payment guides.
