Definition
A refer-a-friend programme rewards an existing player for introducing a new player who signs up and meets a condition (usually a first deposit and some qualifying activity). Both sides typically get a reward — a bonus, free spins, or bet credits.
It is a form of word-of-mouth acquisition run by the operator directly with its own customers, rather than through third-party affiliates, and it can be a cheap channel because the referrer is unpaid media and the new user arrives with a personal recommendation.
Because it turns players into promoters of a gambling product to people they know, refer-a-friend is a regulated area: several markets restrict or prohibit incentivised referral of gambling, require the same advertising standards and disclosures as any promotion, and prohibit referrals to or by minors and self-excluded people.
In context
For affiliates, refer-a-friend is mostly an operator-run mechanic rather than an affiliate channel, but it is relevant in two ways. First, as review content: whether an operator offers it, the reward structure, and the qualifying terms are worth noting, and the honest framing is that the reward is contingent on the referred person depositing and playing, so it is not free value and it involves promoting gambling to friends and family.
Second, as a compliance reference point: refer-a-friend shows how incentivised promotion of gambling by individuals is regulated, which is directly analogous to how influencer and micro-affiliate activity is treated.
Content covering refer-a-friend should note where it is restricted or banned, that the same advertising rules apply (no targeting minors, disclosure of the commercial nature, responsible-gambling messaging), and that operators must exclude self-excluded people from both giving and receiving referrals. It should not encourage aggressive referral behaviour or present it as an income opportunity.
For an affiliate that itself runs any kind of sub-affiliate or ambassador scheme, refer-a-friend is a reminder that turning individuals into paid promoters of gambling brings them within advertising and responsible-gambling rules, and the affiliate is responsible for how those individuals promote.
Worked example
An affiliate's review notes an operator's refer-a-friend gives both parties a bonus once the referred player deposits and wagers a set amount, explains this is contingent value not free, flags that the mechanic is banned in one of the operator's markets, and states self-excluded users are excluded from both sides. It does not present referral as an income opportunity.
