Definition
An SEO audit is a structured review of a website that identifies the technical, content and off-page issues holding back its search performance, and prioritises them by impact and effort. A full audit typically covers crawlability and indexation, site architecture and internal linking, on-page factors, content quality and coverage, Core Web Vitals and mobile rendering, structured data, the backlink profile, and analytics and tracking setup.
The value of an audit is not the list of problems but the prioritisation. Any large site has dozens of issues; the audit's job is to separate the few that materially affect rankings and traffic from the many that are cosmetic, and to sequence the fixes so effort goes where it moves the needle.
In context
For an iGaming affiliate site, an audit almost always surfaces the same families of issues. Indexation problems: thousands of thin templated or parameter URLs bloating the index and diluting crawl.
Content problems: near-duplicate operator pages, missing depth versus ranking competitors, no expertise signals. Internal-linking problems: orphaned reviews, over-reliance on the global menu, broken links from closed operators.
Off-page problems: a backlink profile with manipulation footprints — exact-match anchor clusters, shared-IP link networks, unnatural growth spikes. Compliance-adjacent problems: unmarked affiliate links, missing responsible-gambling and licence references.
A useful audit produces an ordered action plan, not a 200-point spreadsheet. It states the two or three changes that will most affect traffic — for example, consolidate 800 thin pages into 200 substantive ones, wire contextual internal links into the review template, and disavow an identified link network — and defers the low-impact items.
It also establishes a baseline (indexed coverage, rankings for a tracked keyword set, organic sessions, Core Web Vitals) so the effect of the fixes can be measured over the following months rather than guessed at.
Worked example
An audit of a 12,000-page affiliate site concludes that three things matter: 7,000 parameter and tag URLs should be noindexed, 400 thin operator pages should be merged into 140 real reviews with testing data, and a 90-link network with a shared registrant should be disavowed. The remaining 150 findings are logged as backlog.
Over four months, doing just the three lifts organic traffic 70%.
