The advertiser provides text lines, images, videos and HTML assets, a budget, a target (cost per install or cost per in-app action), and the target countries; Google's systems assemble ads, choose placements, and set bids automatically.
UAC gives the advertiser very little manual control — no placement targeting, no keyword lists, limited audience input — in exchange for reach and automation. The main levers are the asset mix (more varied, higher-quality creatives give the system more to optimise with), the target CPA or CPI, the budget, and the quality of the conversion signal fed back from the app.
In context
For iGaming, UAC is usable only where Google permits gambling app promotion — regulated markets with the operator certified — and it optimises well toward a deep event like a qualified first deposit if that event is passed back cleanly through the MMP and has enough weekly volume. Feeding it a shallow event (install, or raw registration) tends to produce cheap installs with poor downstream value, because that is exactly what the system is being told to maximise.
Because control is limited, running UAC well is mostly an exercise in asset production and signal quality: supply a large, diverse set of compliant creatives so the system can find combinations that work, set the target to a real value event, keep the budget stable enough to let it learn, and read results on cohort quality by market rather than on the in-platform cost-per-install number. On iOS, App Tracking Transparency constrains what UAC can measure and optimise, so its iOS performance is partly modelled and usually read with more caution than Android.
Worked example
An operator runs App campaigns for a licensed market, optimising to a qualified-FTD event passed via its MMP, with 40 compliant creative assets. Cost per install looks high in-platform, but the cohort's deposit and retention rates match the brand average, so the true cost per qualified FTD is competitive and the operator scales the budget in steps.
