Marketers use them for clean presentation, control of the destination after publishing, and analytics on links that live outside their own site.
The same redirect layer, in a different configuration, is a cloaker: a short link that inspects each visitor and sends ad-platform reviewers, bots and out-of-target visitors to one page while sending real targeted users to another. Whether a shortened link is a convenience tool or a cloaking tool depends entirely on what its routing rules do.
In context
For iGaming affiliates, shorteners have honest uses: a single memorable link in a streamer's description or a Telegram channel that routes users to the right app store or the right localised operator page by geo, with click analytics the affiliate would not otherwise get from a third-party platform. Deep-linking a user straight to the app's registration screen, or routing an out-of-market visitor to a compliant informational page, are legitimate routing decisions.
The risk is twofold. First, some ad and social platforms distrust third-party shorteners because they hide the destination, so shortened links can lower deliverability or trigger review.
Second, the geo/device/bot-detection routing that makes shorteners useful is exactly the mechanism of cloaking; a shortener that shows the ad network a compliant page and the user a different offer is violating platform policy and, in many markets, advertising and consumer-protection law. Operators reviewing affiliate funnels treat an opaque shortener in front of the offer as something to inspect: they want to see every page a real targeted user is actually routed to.
Worked example
An affiliate puts one short link in a YouTube description that sends UK viewers to a licensed operator's app listing and everyone else to a comparison page, with honest content on both. That is legitimate geo-routing.
A different affiliate uses a shortener to show the ad network a blank compliance page and users a fake-bonus funnel — the same tool, now a cloaker, and a policy and legal breach.
