Definition
The betting vertical is the category of affiliate offers built around sports betting — pre-match and in-play markets on football, basketball, tennis, esports and dozens of other sports, plus adjacent products like virtual sports and racing. It is the second core iGaming vertical alongside casino, and while it shares the regulatory and advertising landscape, its user behaviour, seasonality and content needs differ.
Betting players tend to be engaged around events and schedules rather than continuously, so demand spikes around major tournaments and league seasons, and content strategy is built around fixtures, odds, previews and tipster material. Betting also has a lower house margin than casino per unit of turnover, so the revenue per active player is often lower than a casino player's, which affects RevShare economics and the acquisition cost a brand can justify.
In context
Betting affiliates cluster into a few types: tipster and prediction sites that build event-driven audiences and monetise them with bookmaker offers; odds-comparison and stats sites that serve high-intent research traffic; and media-buying teams that run bookmaker registration offers around events. Each has its own seasonality — quiet in the off-season, intense during a World Cup or a domestic league run-in — which shapes cash flow and content calendars.
The compliance profile mirrors gambling: age-gating, responsible-gambling messaging, accurate promotion of bonuses and odds boosts, and promotion only of operators licensed for the market. Betting carries some format-specific rules too — restrictions on in-play promotion during live events in some markets, and scrutiny of "risk-free bet" and "bonus" claims.
As with casino, the value of a betting offer depends on the brand's retention, its odds and product quality, and its payment coverage, not just the headline commission.
Worked example
A tipster site's traffic is highly seasonal: it earns 60% of its annual bookmaker commission during three months around a major international tournament and the domestic league climax. It plans content and cash flow around that curve, front-loading operator negotiations before the season and holding reserve budget for the off-season.
