A deferred deep link is a link that sends a user to a specific location inside a mobile app even when the app is not yet installed at the moment of the click.
Definition
A deferred deep link is a link that sends a user to a specific location inside a mobile app even when the app is not yet installed at the moment of the click. If the app is present, it opens directly to the target screen (a normal deep link).
If it is not, the user is routed to the app store to install, and after installation and first open the app reads the stored link context and takes the user to that same target screen, carrying through any campaign and referral parameters.
It solves a real gap in mobile acquisition: a normal deep link is useless to a non-installed user, and a plain store link drops the user on a generic home screen with the original intent and attribution lost. Deferred deep linking preserves both the destination and the campaign data across the install boundary, and it is provided by mobile measurement partners and deep-linking SDKs.
In context
For iGaming, deferred deep linking matters wherever the funnel leads to an app: an affiliate promoting an operator's app, a web-to-app flow, or a campaign built around app installs. Without it, a user who taps an affiliate link for "claim this bonus in the app" installs the app and lands on a generic home screen, losing both the bonus context and, often, the affiliate attribution — so the affiliate is not credited and the user does not get what was advertised.
With it, the user completes install and arrives at the bonus or registration screen with the referral intact.
The attribution side runs through the mobile measurement partner and the platform privacy frameworks (Apple's SKAdNetwork and AdAttributionKit, Google Play install referrer), which constrain what identifiers are available and add delay and aggregation to install attribution. Affiliates working app offers need to confirm how the operator attributes installs, what the click-to-install window is, and whether deferred deep links carry their sub-IDs through to the post-install event.
Compliance still applies end to end: age-gating and responsible-gambling messaging must be present on the pre-install page and in the app, and the smoother deferred flow must not be used to rush users past required checks. Done right, deferred deep linking removes a major drop-off point in app acquisition and keeps affiliate credit and user intent aligned across the install.
Worked example
An affiliate runs an "open a verified account in the app" campaign with deferred deep links. A user without the app taps the link, installs from the store, opens the app, and lands directly on the registration screen with the affiliate's sub-ID and the bonus offer intact.
The mobile measurement partner attributes the install to the affiliate within the operator's stated window.
