Definition
Demo mode, also called fun play, free play or practice mode, lets a visitor play a casino game with virtual credits and no real money staked or won. The game runs the same client and usually the same maths as the real-money version, but bets are settled against a fake balance, so outcomes have no financial consequence.
Operators offer it to let players try games before depositing, and studios provide demo builds of most slots.
Demo mode is useful and widely expected, but it is also a regulated area. Several jurisdictions require that demo games use the same RTP and behaviour as the real version (so practice play is not made artificially generous), restrict or ban demo play being accessible without age verification, and in some cases prohibit offering demo games at all to unregistered or unverified users because they function as advertising and can normalise gambling for minors.
In context
For affiliates, demo games are a common traffic and engagement tool: hosting playable demo slots on a review site keeps visitors on the page, supports honest "how the game works" content, and lets readers evaluate volatility and features before choosing where to play. This is legitimate, but it carries obligations.
The demo must be the certified real-money build at true RTP; age-gating and responsible-gambling messaging should be present; and the affiliate should not present demo results (which are variance, often on a padded starting balance) as indicative of what real play returns.
Regulatory attention to demo play has increased. Where a market requires age verification before demo access, an affiliate embedding provider demos has to comply too, not just the operator.
Marketing rules in some jurisdictions treat free-play games aimed at unregistered users as gambling advertising subject to the full content code. And "social casino" style free games with no path to withdrawal are a separate, sometimes separately regulated category.
A review site using demo games well treats them as an educational and comparison feature with the same compliance care as any other gambling content, not as an unregulated way to drive engagement.
Worked example
An affiliate embeds provider demo slots on its review pages at certified RTP, behind an age-confirmation gate, with responsible-gambling links and a note that demo results reflect short-term variance. When it expands into a market that requires verified age for demo access, it gates the demos there behind the same check the operators use.
