Geo-dependent query

A geo-dependent query is a search whose results a search engine deliberately varies by the searcher's location, because the intent is inherently local.

Definition

A geo-dependent query is a search whose results a search engine deliberately varies by the searcher's location, because the intent is inherently local. "Casinos near me", "online gambling legal", "[sport] betting sites" and "licensed casino" all return different results in different countries and sometimes different cities, because what is relevant, legal and available depends on where the user is.

The opposite is a geo-independent query, where the best answer is the same everywhere.

Search engines detect geo-dependence from query wording and from observed behaviour - if past searchers in different places clicked different results for the same query, the engine treats it as local and localises future results. For a query judged geo-dependent, a page's ability to rank in a given market depends heavily on signals that the page and site are relevant to and authoritative for that market, not just on general topical strength.

In context

Almost every commercial iGaming query is geo-dependent, because licensing, legality, available operators, payment methods and bonus rules all differ by market. This shapes affiliate site architecture: a single "best online casinos" page cannot serve every country well, so sites build market-specific pages (or market-specific sections or domains) that name the jurisdiction, list only operators licensed there, use local currency and payment methods, and reference the correct regulator and responsible-gambling resources.

Ranking for geo-dependent queries in a target market means sending the right signals for that market: a clear market focus in the content and URL structure, hreflang and, where used, country targeting; local licensing and regulator references; local payment methods and currency; and ideally links and mentions from sources based in or focused on that market. A site with strong general authority but no market-specific signals often ranks well in its home country and poorly elsewhere for the same query, and the fix is market-level content and signals rather than more generic link building.

Worked example

An affiliate ranks top-three for "best online casino" in its home market but outside the top 30 in three other target countries. It builds dedicated market pages for each - local licence list, local payment methods, correct regulator and helpline, hreflang set - and earns a few links from publications in those markets.

Rankings in the new markets climb into the top ten over two quarters.
