In brief

Local SEO is optimisation aimed at ranking for searches with a geographic dimension — a country, region or city — and at being the result a search engine shows to users physically in or querying about that place.

Definition

Local SEO is optimisation aimed at ranking for searches with a geographic dimension — a country, region or city — and at being the result a search engine shows to users physically in or querying about that place. For a business with premises it includes business-profile listings, maps, reviews and local citations.

For an online business without physical locations, the equivalent is market-level SEO: building pages and signals that make the site the right answer for "[topic] in [country]" and for users searching from that country.

Search engines localise results heavily. The same query returns different pages, and different SERP features, depending on the searcher's country and language, so a site that is strong globally can be weak in a specific market it has not built for.

Market-level SEO is the work of being genuinely relevant per country: local content, local language, local entities, and signals that tie the site to that market.

In context

For an iGaming affiliate, iGaming is inherently market-specific — legality, licensed operators, payment methods, bonuses, tax treatment and regulator all differ by country — so market-level SEO is not optional, it is the structure of the whole site. Doing it well means dedicated, genuinely localised sections per market: content in the market's language written by someone who knows it (not machine-translated), operators that are actually licensed there, local payment methods, references to the correct regulator and self-exclusion scheme, and prices and terms that are current for that country.

Thin "[country] casino" pages that are templated translations of a global page tend to be treated as low value.

The technical layer is hreflang and clean per-market URL structure (subdirectories or subdomains per language/market), so search engines serve the right localised version and do not treat the versions as duplicates. Signals that reinforce market relevance include local backlinks and digital PR in that country's media, mentions alongside local entities, and engagement from local users.

For a bilingual glossary specifically, the EN and RU versions should be hreflang-paired, each genuinely written rather than translated word-for-word, and each connected to the terminology, regulators and examples relevant to its audience. Market-level SEO is ultimately about earning authority country by country rather than assuming global strength carries over.

Worked example

An affiliate expanding into a new country builds a dedicated market section: local-language content written by a native specialist, only operators licensed by that country's regulator, local payment methods, the correct self-exclusion scheme, and hreflang links to its other market versions. Over two quarters it starts ranking for "[country] casino" queries where its templated page had never moved.
