Definition
Digital PR is the practice of earning links and brand mentions from news sites, industry publications and other authoritative media by creating genuinely newsworthy material — original research, data studies, surveys, expert commentary, tools, or timely reactions — and pitching it to journalists and editors. It borrows the methods of traditional public relations but is aimed partly at SEO outcomes: high-authority editorial backlinks, branded and unlinked mentions that build entity recognition, and referral traffic.
Unlike link schemes, digital PR links are editorially given because the content has value to the publication's audience, which is exactly what search engines want to reward. It is slower and less predictable than buying links, the coverage cannot be fully controlled, and a single strong campaign can produce dozens of quality links while another produces none — but the links it does earn are the kind that survive algorithm updates.
In context
For iGaming, digital PR is one of the few link-acquisition routes that is both effective and low-risk, and for a licensed operator or a serious affiliate it is often the core of the off-site strategy. Workable angles: proprietary data from the site's own audience (betting trends, regional gambling behaviour, prize-draw statistics), analysis tied to major sporting events, responsible-gambling research, industry salary or market-size studies, and expert comment for journalists covering regulation.
Mainstream outlets are cautious about linking to gambling sites, so campaigns often lead with the data or the expertise rather than the brand, and accept that some coverage will be an unlinked mention — still valuable for entity authority.
Execution is a PR discipline: build a media list, time the pitch to the news cycle, give journalists a ready-to-use asset (clean data, quotes, visuals), and follow up. Measurement covers links earned and their authority, referring-domain growth, branded search lift, and mentions in Google's knowledge understanding of the brand.
The compliance overlay matters — data must be accurate, claims must not imply easy winnings, and responsible-gambling framing should be present — but a well-run digital PR programme is how an iGaming site builds the durable authority that supports every other page's ability to rank, without the manual-action risk that comes with bought links.
Worked example
An affiliate commissions a survey of 2,000 bettors on in-play betting habits, packages the findings with charts and regional breakdowns, and pitches it to sports and finance desks ahead of a major tournament. The campaign earns 22 editorial links and about 40 unlinked brand mentions; referring domains and branded search both rise over the following quarter.
