Definition

PDL offers, from Payday Loan, promote short-term, small-sum consumer loans from microfinance lenders — typically borrowed against the borrower's next paycheck and repaid within days or weeks. The affiliate is paid per funded loan or per accepted application.

PDL is a finance vertical, adjacent to but separate from iGaming affiliate work, and it shares traffic sources, comparison-site formats and some of the same media buyers.

PDL converts well on high-intent search and comparison traffic — people actively looking to borrow — and pays well per action, which makes it attractive. But it is one of the most heavily regulated affiliate verticals.

Many jurisdictions cap the interest rate, require the lender to hold a specific licence, mandate affordability checks, and restrict what advertising can claim about speed, approval likelihood and cost. Some markets have effectively banned the product; others permit it only through licensed brokers with strict disclosure.

In context

Running PDL requires the affiliate to match creatives and landing pages to each market's rules and to expect strict lead scrubbing on affordability and identity. Payouts depend on the funded-loan rate, which the lender controls through its own underwriting, so a headline per-lead figure can be far higher than the effective per-accepted-lead figure.

Affiliates vet the advertiser's licensing and approval process before scaling, because a lender that rejects most applications makes the traffic uneconomic regardless of the advertised payout.

PDL also carries reputational and compliance risk that leads some networks and directories to exclude the vertical entirely, in the same way they may exclude adult or certain grey verticals. For an iGaming affiliate, PDL is relevant mainly as a possible use of finance-related search or comparison traffic, but it comes with a different and generally heavier regulatory burden than gambling, and careless PDL advertising — overstated approval odds, hidden costs, targeting vulnerable audiences — is both ineffective and a fast route to enforcement action.

Worked example

A PDL comparison page in a regulated market earns $28 per funded loan. It must display the representative APR and the lender's licence number on every listing, and the lender funds only 40% of applications after affordability checks, so the affiliate's effective payout per accepted lead is about $11.20 and the campaign is priced around that number, not the $28.
