Definition

The skyscraper technique is a content and link-building method: find a piece of content that ranks well and has earned links, create something substantially better on the same topic (more comprehensive, more current, better presented, with original data), and then reach out to the sites linking to the original to suggest linking to the improved version instead. The idea is to earn links by being demonstrably the best resource on a topic that already has proven link demand.

It works when the improvement is real and the outreach is relevant, but it is often applied mechanically - producing bloated content that is longer rather than better, and sending mass, low-relevance outreach - which yields few links and content that does not serve readers. The durable version is simply: make the best resource on a topic that matters, then tell the people who would genuinely want to link to it.

In context

For an iGaming affiliate, the skyscraper technique is only worth doing in its genuine form, because the niche's competitiveness and link-spam scrutiny punish the mechanical version. The genuine version means picking a topic where a linkable resource already exists but is beatable - an out-of-date statistics page, a shallow guide, a tool that could be better - and building something that is actually the best available: original testing data, a more thorough and current treatment, better structure, a working tool.

The outreach then goes only to sites whose link to the inferior version would genuinely be better pointed at yours.

Where this overlaps naturally is with the affiliate's own strengths: first-hand payout and operator testing data, a comprehensive maintained glossary, original research (a survey, an analysis across many operators). Those are the assets that can legitimately be "the best resource" on their topic and attract editorial links.

The mechanical version - padding a page to 5,000 words and emailing hundreds of unrelated sites - is link spam by another name and does not produce durable links. For affiliate-facing content, the framing is that the skyscraper technique is worthwhile only as "build the genuinely best resource on a topic with proven link demand, then do relevant outreach", that length is not the improvement, that it works best applied to the affiliate's original-data and reference assets, and that the mechanical mass-outreach version is ineffective and risky.

Worked example

An affiliate finds a widely linked but outdated "online gambling statistics" page. It publishes a genuinely better resource - current figures, original survey data, clear charts, sourced and dated - and emails only the sites whose link would be more useful pointing at the new version.

It earns a modest number of editorial links, and does not do mass unrelated outreach or pad the page for length.
