Definition
The title tag is the HTML element (<title>) that defines the title of a web page. It is used by search engines as the main candidate for the clickable headline of a result, shown in the browser tab, and used as the default text when the page is shared or bookmarked.
It is one of the most important on-page SEO elements because it summarises the page's topic for both ranking and click-through.
A well-constructed title states the page's primary topic clearly, ideally leads with the term the page targets, stays within roughly 50–60 characters so it is not truncated in results, and is unique across the site. Search engines may rewrite a title in results if they judge the tag to be poorly aligned with the query or the page content — stuffed with keywords, too generic, or misleading — so the title should describe the page accurately rather than gaming a rewrite.
In context
On an iGaming affiliate site, title tags carry the heaviest keyword-targeting load: a casino review's title typically pairs the brand with the page's angle ("BrandX Casino Review 2026 — Bonuses, Payout Speed, Licence"), a comparison page names the comparison, and a guide names the question it answers. Because these sites often have many similar pages — one review per operator, one guide per market — templated titles must still produce a unique, specific string for each, or the site develops large clusters of near-duplicate titles that dilute relevance.
Common title problems in this niche are truncation from over-long strings, boilerplate prefixes or suffixes that push the useful words past the visible limit, duplicate titles across paginated or filtered pages, and titles that promise something the page does not deliver (a bonus figure that is out of date, a "best" claim with no basis). Titles are also cheap to test: changing the phrasing, the leading term or the value proposition and measuring the change in click-through rate from search is one of the lowest-effort optimisations available.
Worked example
An affiliate changes a review's title from "Casino Review | SiteName" to "BrandX Casino Review 2026 — Payout Speed, Bonus, Licence Check". The page's average position is unchanged, but click-through rate from search rises from 3.1% to 4.6% because the new title states the specific value the page offers.
