Definition
The meta description is an HTML tag (<meta name="description">) that provides a short summary of a page's content. Search engines often use it as the snippet shown beneath the title in a result, though they frequently generate their own snippet from page text if they judge it a better match for the query.
The meta description is not a direct ranking factor, but it strongly influences click-through rate from search, which is why it is treated as an on-page SEO element.
An effective meta description is a concise, accurate summary — roughly 120–160 characters — that includes the page's main topic, states what the user will get, and gives a reason to click rather than choosing a competitor's result. Each page should have a unique description; large blocks of duplicate or missing descriptions are a common site-quality issue that search-engine reports flag.
In context
On iGaming affiliate sites, meta descriptions are usually templated per page type — one pattern for reviews, one for comparisons, one for guides — with variables filled from the page's data (brand name, bonus, market). The templating must still produce a distinct, readable sentence for each page; a pattern that yields "Read our review of {brand}." across 500 pages is technically unique but adds nothing.
The better patterns surface the page's specific value: the tested payout time, the licence status, the exact comparison being made.
Because search engines rewrite descriptions so often, the practical goal is not to control the snippet but to raise the odds that the shown snippet is compelling for the queries the page targets. That means writing the description to match the page's primary intent, keeping it honest so it does not undersell or oversell, and avoiding the two failure modes search-engine audits penalise: missing descriptions on indexable pages, and identical descriptions repeated across many pages.
Worked example
An affiliate replaces a generic templated description ("Our expert review of {brand}.") with a pattern that fills in tested facts: "We tested {brand}'s withdrawals ({payout_time}), checked its {licence} licence and read the {bonus} bonus terms. Full review inside."
Click-through from search rises across the review section without any ranking change.
