Definition
ASO, App Store Optimisation, is the discipline of improving an app's visibility and conversion in the Apple App Store and Google Play so that more of the people who could install it actually do. It covers two layers.
On-metadata factors are the elements the publisher directly controls: the app title and subtitle, the keyword field, the description, the icon, screenshots, the preview video and the category. Off-metadata factors are outcomes the stores measure and reward: install velocity, retention, ratings volume and average score, review sentiment and, increasingly, post-install engagement signals.
Together these determine keyword rankings, placement in browse and "similar apps" surfaces, and the tap-through-to-install rate of the store listing itself.
For iGaming, ASO drives organic installs of casino and betting apps in the markets where store policy permits real-money gambling apps. Where it does not, publishers rely on licensed-operator apps in regulated markets or on web-to-app and PWA routes that bypass the store entirely, and ASO effort shifts to the operator's own site and any companion utility apps.
In context
ASO and paid user acquisition reinforce each other. A well-optimised listing lifts the conversion rate of every visit, paid or organic, so the same ad budget buys more installs; and a burst of paid installs raises install velocity, which can lift organic rankings, which brings more free installs.
Practitioners test listing elements the way media buyers test creatives: two icon variants, two screenshot orders, two subtitle phrasings, each measured on store conversion rate over a fixed number of impressions.
Gambling apps face country-by-country store gating, age ratings and policy reviews that can remove an app without warning, so iGaming ASO includes contingency planning: a companion or lighter-touch app as a fallback, careful keyword choice that does not trip automated policy filters, and localisation that respects each market's advertising rules. Metrics that matter are keyword rankings for commercial terms, store conversion rate, cost per install blended across paid and organic, and the install-to-registration and registration-to-deposit rates that tell you whether the installs are worth anything.
Worked example
An operator rewrites its betting app's subtitle from a generic slogan to "Live odds, fast withdrawals, licensed in Ontario", adds five localised screenshots and a 15-second preview. Store conversion rate rises from 24% to 31%, and because paid install volume is unchanged, cost per install falls by about a fifth.
