Definition

Search share of voice is an estimate of how much of the total available organic visibility for a defined keyword set a site captures relative to all competitors ranking for those terms. Each keyword is weighted (usually by search volume and by the click-through rate expected at the site's position), the weighted visibility is summed across the set, and each domain's share of that total is expressed as a percentage.

Tracking it over time shows whether a site is gaining or losing ground in its market as a whole, not just on individual keywords.

SoV is a market-level metric. A site can hold its individual rankings and still lose share of voice because competitors added pages, won SERP features, or expanded into new queries.

It is more informative than an absolute visibility score for competitive analysis because it is inherently relative, but it depends entirely on the keyword set chosen — a flattering set produces a flattering number.

In context

For an iGaming affiliate, SoV is the metric that frames competitive position for a niche or a market: "we hold 14% of organic visibility for UK casino-review queries; the top competitor holds 31%". Segmenting SoV by cluster — casino reviews, bonus queries, payment-method queries, glossary and informational terms, per country — shows where the site is strong, where a competitor dominates, and where there is unclaimed visibility to target.

A rising SoV in a cluster is evidence that a content and link programme is working at the market level even before it shows fully in traffic.

The cautions are important in this sector. The keyword set must be built honestly to represent real commercial and topical demand, or SoV becomes a vanity number.

SERP features (Google's own results, ad blocks, People Also Ask) absorb clicks that weighted SoV models may over-attribute to organic positions, so SoV should be read next to actual Search Console clicks. And competitor SoV is estimated from third-party rank data with its own sampling limits.

Used carefully, SoV is a good executive-level summary of whether the site is winning or losing its market; used loosely, it is easy to game by choosing the set.

Worked example

An affiliate builds a 1,200-keyword market map for German casino search and tracks SoV by cluster. Over two quarters its glossary-cluster SoV rises from 9% to 22% as pages index and earn links, while its bonus-cluster SoV falls because a competitor launched 40 new bonus pages — pinpointing where to focus the next content sprint.
