Definition

Striking-distance keywords are search queries for which a site already ranks somewhere on the edge of meaningful visibility — commonly positions 5 to 20, sometimes defined as page two, roughly positions 11 to 20 — where a relatively small improvement can move the page into the range that actually earns clicks. They are identified from Search Console or a rank tracker by filtering for pages with impressions but low average position and low click-through rate.

The appeal is efficiency. These pages have already cleared the hardest part — they are indexed, considered relevant, and have some authority for the query — so the work to lift them is usually optimisation rather than creation: matching intent better, adding depth or a missing subtopic, improving the title and snippet, strengthening internal links, or refreshing stale content.

The expected return per hour of effort is higher than starting a new page from zero.

In context

For an iGaming affiliate with a large content library, striking-distance analysis is a recurring optimisation routine. The typical process: pull queries where a page ranks 5–20 with real impression volume; for each, check what the pages ranking above it cover that this page does not; then act — expand the section that matches the query, fix intent mismatch (an informational page ranking for a comparison query may need a comparison element), rewrite the title to include the query phrasing, add internal links from stronger related pages, and update the visible date if the content genuinely changed.

Because the page already has history and relevance, results often show within weeks.

Glossary and informational pages are especially good candidates: a term page ranking at position 12 for its primary query and for several related long-tail phrasings can often be lifted by adding the specific sub-questions users ask (visible in People Also Ask and in Search Console query data) as clearly structured sections. Commercial pages benefit too, but competition for the top positions on money terms is fiercer, so the realistic striking-distance wins there are the secondary and long-tail queries around the main one.

The discipline is to work this list systematically rather than always building new pages, since a content library of any size usually has more latent traffic in its positions 5–20 than in new topics.

Worked example

An affiliate exports Search Console queries where pages rank 8–18 with over 100 monthly impressions and finds 60 such opportunities. It works through them over a month — adding subtopics, fixing titles, strengthening internal links — and about half move into the top five, adding more organic traffic than the two new pages it would otherwise have built in that time.
