Definition
Verification is the process by which an operator confirms that an account holder is who they claim to be and is eligible to use the service — of legal age, resident in an allowed jurisdiction, using their own identity and their own payment methods. In licensed iGaming it is a regulatory obligation, not an optional anti-fraud step, and licences specify when it must happen: at registration, before the first withdrawal, when a spending or deposit threshold is crossed, or when a risk indicator fires.
Verification overlaps heavily with KYC (Know Your Customer) and typically combines several checks: identity document capture and validation, a selfie or liveness check matched to the document, address confirmation, database and sanctions-list lookups, and payment-instrument ownership checks. Enhanced due diligence adds source-of-funds evidence for higher-risk or higher-value customers.
The depth of verification is risk-based: a small-stakes recreational player faces less friction than someone depositing large sums or triggering AML flags.
In context
Verification is a direct trade-off between compliance and conversion. Every additional field, document upload and waiting period between registration and funded play loses a share of users, and support load rises with each manual review.
Operators tune this carefully: many delay full verification to the first withdrawal, so a player can register, deposit and play with only lightweight checks, and the heavier identity work happens at the point where the player has demonstrated intent and there is money to protect. This can lift registration-to-deposit conversion by several percentage points.
For affiliates, verification is felt as the gap between a registration and a funded, verified player who counts for CPA qualification or generates RevShare. A brand with slow or clumsy verification will show a lower deposit-to-registration ratio and a lower qualification rate through no fault of the traffic, so affiliates factor an operator's verification friction into their choice of where to send volume, and a brand that verifies smoothly in a given GEO is worth more per click than one that does not.
Worked example
An operator moves full identity verification from registration to the first withdrawal request. Registration-to-deposit conversion rises from 34% to 40% because new players can fund and play immediately, and the affiliate channel's qualification rate improves as a side effect, since fewer users abandon at a document-upload step they never reach.
