Definition

A featured snippet is a box at or near the top of a search results page that answers a query directly by extracting text — a paragraph, a list, a table, or a step sequence — from one of the ranking pages, with a link to the source. It occupies the position often called "position zero" because it sits above the standard organic results, and the page it is drawn from usually also holds a normal listing.

Winning a featured snippet can increase clicks for informational queries, though not always: for some queries the snippet answers the question so completely that users do not click through at all. Whether it is worth targeting depends on the query — a snippet for "what is RTP" may satisfy the user in place, while a snippet for "how to verify a casino licence" invites a click for the full process.

In context

To earn a featured snippet, a page needs to already rank on the first page for the query and to present a clear, self-contained answer in a format the search engine can lift: a concise definition paragraph immediately under a question-style heading, a properly marked-up ordered or unordered list for process and "best" queries, or a real HTML table for comparison queries. Padding, hedging and burying the answer three paragraphs down all reduce the chance of being selected.

For iGaming affiliates, snippet targeting fits informational and definitional pages — glossary entries, "how does X work" guides, jurisdiction explainers — more than commercial review pages, which rarely trigger snippets. A practical approach is to identify queries where a competitor holds the snippet, check whether the page could answer more clearly and concisely in the same format, and restructure the relevant section accordingly.

Snippets are volatile — they appear, disappear and change source frequently — so they are treated as a bonus on top of a strong ranking rather than a stable traffic source to depend on.

Worked example

An affiliate's glossary page for "wagering requirement" ranks fourth but a competitor holds the featured snippet with a two-sentence definition. The affiliate rewrites its opening so the first paragraph is a clean, self-contained definition directly under an H2 phrased as the question, and it takes the snippet within a week.
