SERM, search engine reputation management, is the practice of shaping what appears when someone searches for a brand, company or person's name — pushing accurate, favourable and controlled results up the first page and pushing damaging, misleading or outdated results down.
Definition
SERM, search engine reputation management, is the practice of shaping what appears when someone searches for a brand, company or person's name — pushing accurate, favourable and controlled results up the first page and pushing damaging, misleading or outdated results down. It combines SEO, content creation, PR and, where legitimate grounds exist, requests to remove or de-index specific content.
SERM sits between marketing and crisis management. Routine SERM builds a strong branded-search footprint before there is a problem: an optimised official site, active and ranking social and directory profiles, positive coverage, and owned content that answers the questions people ask about the brand.
Reactive SERM responds to a specific negative result — a critical article, a scam accusation, a regulator notice, a disgruntled review thread — that is ranking prominently for the brand name.
In context
In iGaming, branded search is high-stakes because "[operator] scam", "[operator] review", "[operator] not paying" and "[brand] legit" are queries potential players run before depositing, and the results shape trust and conversion. Operators and the affiliates who work with them therefore invest in owning the first page for their brand terms with substantive, honest content — a clear licensing and complaints section, a real review presence, transparent terms — rather than leaving it to chance.
Ethical SERM is about accuracy and prominence, not suppression of legitimate criticism. Trying to bury a valid regulator warning, a court judgment or genuine widespread complaints with a wall of thin promotional pages is both unlikely to work durably and a reputational risk in itself if exposed.
The sustainable approach is to fix the underlying issue where there is one, publish accurate information that addresses the concern directly, earn credible third-party coverage, and use formal removal channels only for content that genuinely violates a policy or law (defamation, personal data, impersonation). For affiliates, SERM awareness also means checking a brand's branded-search landscape before promoting it, since a brand with a first page full of non-paying complaints will convert poorly no matter how good the affiliate's own funnel is.
Worked example
An affiliate considers promoting a new operator and checks its branded search: the first page includes two complaint threads about slow withdrawals and a forum warning. It raises this with the affiliate manager, the operator addresses the withdrawal backlog and publishes a payments-transparency page, and only after the branded-search picture improves does the affiliate scale traffic to it.
